Your IPTV subscription supplies the channels, but the player app decides how they look and feel: how quickly you can find a channel, how the guide is laid out, and how smoothly video plays. Two people on the same subscription can have very different experiences depending on the app they use.
What a player app does
A player contains no channels of its own. It takes the login details from your provider, loads your channel list, films and programme guide, and plays them. That means you can change apps at any time without changing your subscription.
Features worth having
- Xtream Codes and M3U support so it works with the details your provider gives you.
- A full programme guide (EPG) with a grid view you can scroll by time.
- Favourites and custom groups to keep the channels you actually watch one click away.
- Search across channels, films and series.
- Catch-up support for programmes that have already aired.
- A choice of video decoder (hardware or software), which helps fix stutter on some devices.
- Multiple playlists and profiles if several people share the device.
- Parental controls with a PIN.
Which kind of app suits which device
- Fire TV Stick and Android TV: the widest choice. Look for a player designed for a TV remote, with a fast guide and large, readable menus.
- Samsung and LG smart TVs: fewer options, found in the TV’s own app store. Several are activated with a device code on the developer’s website.
- iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: players from the App Store, usually with clean interfaces and AirPlay support.
- Android phones and tablets: players from Google Play, handy for watching away from home.
- Windows and Mac: desktop players or a browser-based web player.
Free or paid?
Many players are free with adverts or limited features, with a premium version that removes adverts and adds extras such as recording or multi-screen. Others, especially on Samsung and LG, charge a small activation fee after a trial. These payments go to the app developer and are separate from your subscription. Try the free version first to check it runs well on your device.
Staying safe
- Install from official app stores or the developer’s own website only.
- Be wary of modified or “unlocked” versions of paid apps. They are a common source of malware.
- Keep the app updated.
Our advice
Install two players, load your subscription into both, and use each for an evening. Keep the one where finding a channel feels effortless. If you would like a recommendation for your exact device, ask our support team.
