How to Set Up IPTV on a Smart TV: Samsung, LG and Android TV

Most modern smart TVs can run IPTV without any extra box. The steps differ a little between brands because each uses its own operating system and app store. This guide covers the three most common: Samsung, LG and Android TV (including Google TV).

Check these first

  • Connection: a wired Ethernet cable is the most reliable. On Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band if your router offers it.
  • Software: update the TV’s system software so the app store shows current apps.
  • Login details: have your username, password and server address (or M3U link) ready.

Samsung (Tizen)

  1. Press Home and open Apps.
  2. Use the search icon to find an IPTV player available in your region.
  3. Select Install, then open the app.
  4. Add your playlist. Some Samsung players ask you to enter your details on their website using a device code shown on screen, then reload the app.

LG (webOS)

  1. Press Home and open the LG Content Store (called Apps on newer models).
  2. Search for an IPTV player and install it.
  3. Open the app and add your playlist, either directly or through the app’s website with the code shown on the TV.

Android TV and Google TV (Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense and others)

  1. Open the Google Play Store from the home screen.
  2. Search for an IPTV player and install it.
  3. Open the app, choose the Xtream Codes or M3U option, and enter your details with the remote.

Android TV usually has the widest choice of players, so it is worth trying two and keeping the one you find easiest to use.

Good to know about TV apps

  • Some players for Samsung and LG are free to try and then charge a small one-time or yearly activation fee. That fee goes to the app developer and is separate from your IPTV subscription.
  • App availability varies by country and TV model year. If you cannot find a particular player, try another, or use a streaming stick instead.

Getting the best picture

  • Use a wired connection for 4K whenever you can.
  • Close other apps running on the TV before you start.
  • If the picture stutters, switch the stream to an HD version of the channel to check whether speed is the cause.

If your TV is older

TVs more than a few years old can struggle with newer apps. A Fire TV Stick or Android TV box plugged into an HDMI port is an inexpensive fix. See our Firestick setup guide for the steps.
